How to turn a boned girdle into a sexy corset.

Posted in Uncategorized on October 15, 2011 by amakadesigns

Super easy!

This works only on girdles with boning or a somewhat thick fabric. I recommend putting on your girdle outside of your clothes beforehand to get an idea of how it’ll look.

I’m also using this for my Black Panther costume =DD

1.) Take an old girdle with busted hooks and eyes. Cut them off/ use a seam ripper to remove them. Try not to cut into the elastic, but rather stay on the edge of the opening.

sorry, crappy webcam pics

2.) Find a trim with metal holes in it. Most likely, it’ll be at your favorite fabric/craft store.

3.) Pin trim to girdle where hooks and eyes once were. Make sure all the holes line up before you start sewing by holding both sides together in comparison. Sew trim to girdle with a backstich in similar colored thread. Stitch on the side away from the center. The holes in my trim weren’t all centered in the middle of the trim, so I made sure the side farthest away from the holes was facing away from the center to give me a little seam allowance.. I hope that makes sense. lol.

4.) Repeat with second side. Lace up your corset with a cool ribbon or cord. I used an old shoelace from my Docs.

FLAUNT IT

I wore it with my Song of Storms shirt I scored from Busted Tees, and a long plain pencil skirt from H&M. Blazer is H&M, too. I work there now, so I have hella stuff from there that I modify or just wear. I’ll show you in a new post sometime.

HALLOWEEEEEEEEEN!!

Posted in How To's, Updates on October 14, 2011 by amakadesigns

Halloween, my FAVORITE holiday, is just around the corner.

=DDDDDDDDDDD

Anyway, I took a lot of time and did a lot of research because whatever I decided to be needed to be:

A)Sexy but not skanky,

B) Super cool and hinting towards my nerdiness,

and

C) Just that much better than your store-bought costume from the stripper store. Bitch.

I’ve been watching a lot of the new Avengers:World’s Mightiest Heroes Cartoon on Netflix and my favorite superhero is the Black Panther, hands down. He’s the smartest, wisest dude in there if you ask me.

mmmmm he know he foine

I’ve always been more into cartoons than comics, so I don’t know a lot about BP’s back story. So I googled…and came across this:

And so, after many days of deliberating and googling, I’ve decided than on top of being Him from the Powerpuff Girls (My co-worker is going to be Ms Bellum!) I’m going to be Shuri, the female Black Panther. I’m already trying to buy all the comics about her off ebay =D

So basically, I’m going to be posting details and tutorials about every aspect of this costume that I create. As well as tutorials for the other costume.

Are you guys excited? You should be.

Buttons are cool.

Buttons.

They hold your pants up and keep your boobs when it comes to practicality, but as a creative outlet, the possibilities are pretty freakin’ endless. I recently took an apparel construction class at my community college where we made a somewhat complicated lined dress out of the fabric and lining of our choosing. Many people chose wild, beautiful prints, tweeds, or super bright colors, but I chose a plain black broadcloth with a cool blue lining. Sort of boring, but I needed to keep it simple for when I did this:

Buttons!

It took me the equivalent of one entire Law and Order SVU marathon to do it (I kind of love that show) at a fairly slow pace with many breaks and moments where I was had to stop because I had accidentally sent a stitch through the lining. The broadcloth got a little puckered in the process, but the result is one super sweet buttony-shoulder. I’m not sure what else to call it.

Anyhoo, I plan on doing this button embellishment again, but this time to a cotton t-shirt. I’ll do a quickie tutorial on it, but as long as you know how to sew buttons the concept is fairly easy to understand.

You can easily score a big ol bag of buttons at your local fabric store in the remnants section.

How to make a simple safety pin necklace!

Posted in How To's on September 3, 2010 by amakadesigns

Tutorial on how to make a cool bib necklace out of a chain and safety pins I scored from the Dollar Tree. I’m not affiliated with them or anything like that, I’m just a fan of cheap stuff =P

The pins don’t come undone or anything like that while I’m wearing it, but if I were to make it again I’d probably glue all the pins shut with a hot glue gun or superglue. Safety first, right? (I still could at this point but I’m just lazy.)
